New Case of H7N9 Bird Flu Confirmed in Beijing, China
It has been confirmed that a Chinese poultry worker has contracted the H7N9 bird flu virus. It is the first case in the southern Guangdong province. In Mainland China, 134 cases have now been confirmed; 44 people have died of the deadly disease. Most cases of the virus have been recorded in eastern Chin; only one has been one reported outside the mainland, in Taiwan. Scientists confirmed the first possible case of person-to-person direct transmission.
Many of those infected with the virus had been in direct contact with birds, mostly at poultry markets. These markets have now been closed by officials in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.
