This year, Belize has reported a number of cases of the influenza A virus. No deaths from the H1N1 virus have been reported. Jorge Polanco, Acting Director of Health Services stated that:
“In Belize, from January to now, we’ve had a few cases. We’ve had a little over ten cases that were confirmed as H1N1…and what the public should know is that this influenza disease is caused by a virus. The influenza virus is transmitted from person to person through contacts of items that are contaminated.”
In 2009, there was fear of an epidemic of H1N1 in Belize which sent the Ministry of Health and the public into a frenzy.
