A six-year-old girl from Battambang province remains in a stable condition in hospital after contracting the H5N1 virus. Investigations are being carried out to determine if chickens and ducks from the local area were the source of the virus.
The health minister Mam Bunheng stated that Avian influenza H5N1 remains a serious health threat with children being the most vulnerable and therefore most at risk. This is the 22nd case recorded this year by the World Health Organization; 11 out of the 22 cases survived. H5N1 influenza normally spreads between sick poultry but can spread from poultry to humans, according to the WHO.
Cambodia has experience the worst outbreak of the virus with 43 recorded cases, of which 30 have been fatal.
